About Dr. McDermott

Dr. Scott McDermott is part of the Roper St. Francis Physician Partners Orthopaedics team. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He completed his residency at Summa Health System and his fellowship at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics.

As a child, Dr. McDermott received a toolbox engraved with his name from his grandfather, who was a finish carpenter. From that moment, he was hooked on fixing things that were broken. But more importantly, his grandfather advised him to “just do what you love.” To this day, whether he is setting a broken bone or performing a complex hip or knee replacement, he carries that lesson forward—assessing the situation, finding a solution, and repairing it with care.

Dr. McDermott is passionate about his work and embraces the challenges of each day. He treats patients with respect and dignity, recognizing that everyone has unique beliefs and wishes.

When he isn’t working, Dr. McDermott enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, Mariah. They love traveling, especially to destinations with great beaches.

Originally from Ellenboro, NC, Tony graduated from Gardner-Webb University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Chemistry minor before earning his Masters in Physician Assistant Studies at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Growing up in a small town at the base of the mountains in North Carolina, Tony stays true to himself and his small-town roots. He applies these morals and values to his daily life and patient care. Tony believes that the most important part of successful healthcare is taking the time to listen to patients and explaining medicine in a way that is easy for everyone to understand. He takes the time to completely understand what the patient is complaining of and ensuring that the patient understands their medical problem and plan of care. Tony believes in the power of patient education to achieve the best possible outcome and helps to ensure patients make the decision that is right for them.

A former collegiate wrestler at Gardner-Webb University, Tony stays active by working out in the gym and anything that involves working outdoors. He enjoys spending time doing anything outdoors. He loves spending time with his wife in the woods fishing, hunting, or just exploring.
